Mixing Materials in Your Home Interior

At JSDG, we love to give our clients tips and tricks throughout the interior design process. For example— our high-end design means intentionally mixing materials in your home interior. In fact, it’s a founding design principle here at Jamie Schachtel Design Group. Mixing materials is bold; it adds drama, contrast, and texture to your spaces. From modern and minimalist looks, to farmhouse style furniture and industrial interior design cues, we find the beautiful balance of all you love. With 25 years of designing full home interiors and thousands of rooms, we know how to mix materials to bring a look unique to your personality and lifestyle.

How We Mix Materials

One of our most exciting vintage restoration projects in Highland Park included a variety of eclectic materials and textures to create the overall look. Hair on hyde, vinyl grasscloth wallpaper, fur pillows, titanium hardware, a metal and wood barn door, a shagreen cover table, hand-blown glass light fixtures, and baked-brick backsplash combined to create an original, warm, modern feel throughout the client’s home interior.

Mixing beautiful textures as well as mixing in utility is another pillar of Jamie’s design philosophy. For example, the metal and wood barn door in the aforementioned home interior brings an element of rustic style furniture as well as additional functionality. The original door swung into the family room, taking up valuable space. This new, modern barn door slides to open up the space, now serving as a functional focal point of the room.

Other projects like this industrial interior design build of a River North bachelor pad perfectly fused gray-blue rift sawn kitchen cabinets, matte navy blue-painted upper cabinets, and exposed beams often seen with rustic style furniture. We like to approach industrial interior design projects to soften how cold and hard such spaces can be; mixing materials allows us to make industrial home interiors more inviting. We know that ultimately these home interiors are living spaces and thus need to be livable and comfortable.

Mixing Materials With Touch and Feel Design Boards

Making selections is an incredibly fun and inspiring part of the JSDG interior design process and we are grateful for our abundant edited library of fabrics, textures, materials and more. As we concept the space together, we create a touch and feel design board so you can see how your selections come to life cohesively. Flow from room to room is vital— and we can begin to imagine it as early as the design board.
